An Easy-to-Use Literature Program with Hands-On Activities
This easy-to-use program consists of a worktext guiding students to understand, enjoy, and be enriched by five classic works of children’s literature: The Bronze Bow, The Miracle Worker, A Christmas Carol, Banner in the Sky, and The Fellowship of the Ring.
The Treasure Trove of Literature, Level 4 includes:
- Vocabulary assignments
- Reading comprehension questions
- Oral narration assignments
- Literary elements: setting, character, plot, and theme
- Literary devices (subplots, types of conflicts, dramatic irony, and more)
- Literary Connections (studies in geography, history, music, and more referenced in the readings)
- Weekly questions for individual or group discussion
- Five studies of virtuous character qualities and saintly role models
- Weekly hands-on activities
- A final project for each book
- Removable answer key, including a detailed parent’s guide to discussion questions
Level 4 continues the approach taken in Level 3 by challenging students to practice the skills needed to read and understand works of literature on their own. To encourage independent study, all instructions are directed to the student.
Note: while Level 4 asks students to look up their own vocabulary words, an exception is made for A Christmas Carol, which contains many archaic terms and idioms. Extensive notes and definitions are provided to help the student understand archaic and idiomatic terms and historical allusions. (Click View Samples above to see sample pages from the study guide for A Christmas Carol.)
Recommended for grades 7-9. The program is designed to be completed in one year, but it could be completed over a longer period. A daily schedule for this program is available in CHC Lesson Plans for Seventh Grade.
